Franz Murer, a respected Austrian statesman and wealthy landowner, was charged in 1963 with the murder of thousands of Lithuanian Jews as head of the Vilnius ghetto from 1941 to 1943. Based on true events, countless survivors and witnesses from around the world testified at the trial, leaving little doubt of the so-called Butcher of Vilnius’ guilt. But in a nation still in denial about its involvement in the war, conflicted jurors were manipulated and ambivalent.
